The commemorative group photograph seemingly obligatory when doing a pilgrimage in Japan; this is from Shōdoshima in March 1988 at a mountain temple at the start of the route, along with its priest. The party was amused at the idea of them and the photographer who was taking their photograph, being photographed at the same time. In another sign of rural decline and problems for Buddhist temples, this site (a sub-site of Temple 1 on the Shōdoshima route) was run-down and closed when visited in spring 2010.
