Events Kant, Neo-Kantianism, and Japanese Philosophy

July 5th, 2025. 09:00~17:00 JST

Nanzan Institute, room 217

The first book by Kant to enter Japan was most likely Anthropologie in pragmatischer Hinsicht. It was brought to Nagasaki by a German merchant named Carl Ernst Boeddinghaus around 1856. The Japanese Reception of Kant during the Meiji Period set the foundations for studying and developing philosophy in Japan in the later part of the 19th century. The emphasis on phenomenology and Heidegger has often overshadowed the importance of Kant and Neo-Kantian philosophy for Japanese philosophy at the beginning of the 20th century. This conference will explore the importance of Kant and neo-Kantianism in Japanese philosophy in the early 20th century.
