Events The Eighth Buddhist Text Translation Seminar: Nakatomi no harae fūsuisō 中臣祓風水草

October 31st, 2025. 10:30~12:00 JST

online

Speakers Mariangela Carpinteri

The Buddhist Text Translation Seminar is designed to provide researchers who are working on long-term translation projects to discuss their ongoing work in a casual, online format with fellow researchers. The seminar will meet on the morning of the last Friday of the month, six months per year. Participants may join by invitation only.

The eighth meeting of the seminar will be hosted by Mariangela Carpinteri, who will discuss the Nakatomi no harae fūsuisō 中臣祓風水草 by Yamazaki Ansai 山崎闇斎 (1619–1682), a commentary on the Nakatomi no harae, the norito chanted during the Ōharae (大祓, Great Purification). It is a Shintō exegetical with strong Neo-Confucian influences. It belongs to the genre of ritual commentaries that explain the language and symbolism of the Ōharae no kotoba. Like other commentaries of this kind, it emphasizes the concept of purification as articulated in the norito, rather than concentrating primarily on the ritual performance itself.
