March 27th, 2026. 10:30~12:00 JST

online

Speakers Matthew D. McMullen

The Buddhist Text Translation Seminar is designed to provide researchers who are working on long-term translation projects to discuss their ongoing work in a casual, online format with fellow researchers. The seminar will meet on the morning of the last Friday of the month, six months per year. Participants may join by invitation only.

The ninth meeting of the seminar will be hosted by Matthew McMullen, who will discuss a collection of texts traditionally attributed to Kūkai on the title of the Lotus Sutra. The versions of the text vary regarding their level of technical analysis as well as the style of prose. In this seminar, McMullen will discuss the differences in the texts and how they reflect the evolution of esoteric Buddhist interpretations of the language and categorization of Mahayana Buddhists texts.
