Events Mono no Aware from an Intercultural Perspective

Japanese philosophy has long been part of intercultural debate. Yet, the question of how to appropriately handle its terminology remains an open one. Where does it belong in a discourse that sharply separates philosophy, religion, and art? Should its key concepts be translated, or left standing as untranslatable? And how might they be productively connected to non-Japanese ideas? This workshop takes the concept of mono no aware as a starting point for working through some of these questions. In doing so, it also aims to enact an intercultural philosophy within the conversation itself. The workshop is conceived as a space where the work of translating and mediating between languages and traditions of thought is put to the test. Through this dialogue, we hope to make visible what mono no aware can offer a contemporary, lived philosophy.
