Events Nanzan Editors Summit
November 13th, 2026. 14:30~17:30 JST
Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture, room 217
In 2023, a small cohort of editors in Nagoya and Kyoto met to discuss the challenges of managing and editing international journals in Japan. In the following years, the Editors of Journals in Japan (EJJ) expanded to included editors based in Tokyo and Kyushu and has hosted panels at the Association of Asian Studies in Asia in 2024 and 2025 as well as the Asian Studies Conference Japan and European Association of Asian Studies in 2026. These public events have been great opportunities to meet prospective authors and address their questions regarding the publication process. However, these gatherings also exposed technical and institutional problems that require longform debate among editors.
The Nanzan Editors Summit™️ brings together editors from twelve publications that span multiple fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Summit’s objective is to discuss policies and approaches to dealing with the major issues facing journals today, such as open access publishing, administrative downsizing, the impact of publish-or-perish academic culture, funding (or the lack thereof), and the use of LLMs in academic writing and review. Although it may not be possible to resolve all of these issues at the meeting, the Summit will hopefully begin a dialogue among journal editors with the objective of future collaboration.
