Events PLACES TAKING PLACE Third Session
October 22nd, 2026. 09:00~12:00 JST
Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture (room 217)
Place in Italian Studies
Italy is a country of regions, cities, dialects, and local traditions that underwent Unification quite late relative to other Western nation-states. My talk will begin with some general methodological questions concerning the specificity of place in my own research and teaching related to Italy. I will then focus on Rome (the city of cinema) and Milan (the city of media and finance). In terms of cinema studies in particular, it can be interesting to make a comparison with Los Angeles and New York, with many obvious differences. Finally, what happens to place in an ever-more globalized world? Does a focus on place necessarily imply nostalgia or commodification of the local? Or can a focus on a place/on place offer positive and egalitarian modes of living together?
