This report on religion in Japan in 2002 is a slightly abridged translation of a report first published in Japanese as「宗教忌避とナショナル•アイデンテイテイをめぐる宗教の今日的状況」in『現代宗教2003』, 248-63, a journal published annually by the International Institute for the Study of Religion. As in recent years, we received permission from the author to translate her report into English in order to provide information on the current state of religious issues in Japanese society for our readers.
