This report on “religion in the news” in Japan during 2003 is an abridged translation of a report first published in Japanese as「現代宗教者の発言と沈黙」in『現代宗教』(2004, 232-68), a journal published annually by the International Institute for the Study of Religion. As in recent years, the author has kindly consented to allow us to translate her report into English in order to provide information on the current state of religious issues in Japanese society for our readers.
