This report on “religion in the news” in Japan between October 2003 and September 2004 is an abridged translation of a report published in Japanese as「現代宗教の周縁化」in『現代宗教』(2005), a journal published annually by the International Institute for the Study of Religion. As in previous years, the author has kindly consented to allow us to translate her report into English in order to provide information on the current state of religious issues in Japanese society.
