These are two short lectures delivered at a conference on “Nothing in Common: Apophatic Philosophy and Political Theology” held at Boston College in April 2024. The first addresses the general question of apophasis and the second is a response to the writings of Reiner Schürmann and John Caputo on anarchism and the dismantling of principles. As they were both addressed to an audience of theologians and philosophers, the arguments were drawn up in a terra nullius where apophasis and the case against ethical universals seek a foothold in ordinary experience and the commonsense limits of critical reason.
