This essay stems from a chapter in the author’s dissertation and was previously presented at the French Society for Japanese Studies at the University of Orleans on 10 December 2021. The aim of our research is to propose the potentiality of Tanabe Hajime’s philosophy of death in the contexts of contemporary thoughts on death from the 2011 disaster and grief care. The continuing bonds on grief care enable the love of the near-deceased one to be recognized by the survivor through the act of close support. In Tanabe’s existential community between the dead and the living, the recognized love paradoxically enables us to renew ties with the deceased.
