Most philosophical and ethical methods developed in past centuries recommend faithfully following a path traced as straight as possible and oriented towards a carefully defined goal. However, the presence of a framework, regardless of whether it was philosophical, ethical, or religious, seemed restrictive to Nishida. The path forward, he stated, should not be reduced to a set of predetermined rules that need to be scrupulously reproduced and mastered to achieve a predetermined goal. According to him, the feeling of impasse experienced repeatedly by every human being, the difficulty of choosing between several routes to follow, as well as the feeling of wandering without having the ability to orient oneself towards a goal are three common situations that are themselves part of the path to follow.
