Patrick Magoffin
Specialization: Chinese Buddhism, Tiantai, Social History
Patrick is a doctoral candidate in Religious Studies at Brown University and 2023 dissertation fellow of the ACLS Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhist Studies. His dissertation investigates a Tiantai heresy and the formation of monastic communities based on textual practices during the Northern Song (960-1127). In particular, he examines the development of the supposedly heretical community’s soteriology which amalgamated tathāgatagarbha doctrine within their own vision of Tiantai orthodoxy.
