Matt arrived at the Nanzan Institute in the fall of 2017 as a visiting research fellow. The following year, he became a Permanent Fellow and editor of the Japanese Journal of Religious Studies. Matt completed his Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies at the University of California, Berkeley in 2016. He previously received an M.A. in Asian Religions from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and studied at several universities including Columbia University, Waseda University, the University of Virginia, and Taisho University. As a Buddhologist, his research focuses on the development of esoteric Buddhism in medieval Japan, particularly the writings of scholiasts in the Tendai school.
